A Thangka is a type of banner and traditionally features a spiritual painting on a fabric background. Originating in Tibet between the 7th and 12th century, Thangka wall hangings were hung in monasteries, family altars, and used in ceremonial processions. Their images of deities and various religious scenes were a means to teach others about the life and ways of the Buddha. Framed by an ornate brocade fabric, this thangka features a painting of Buddha in the Earth Touching pose. This position refers to when Buddha was meditating to achieve enlightenment. He was temped by the demon, Mara. But placing his hand on the ground, Buddha was able to summon Sthavara the Earth Goddess. She wrung her hair and washed away Mara.
This beautiful thangka was made in Nepal. Each one is truly unique, displaying artistic differences in color and fabric designs. Such variations are signs of the maker’s handmade touch. This banner measures about 20 inches across at the top and about 28 inches long. The hanging’s framed painting measures approximately 8 inches across and 10 inches long.
