A thangka is a type of banner that traditionally features a spiritual painting on a fabric background. Originating in Tibet between the 7th and 12th century, thangka wall hangings were hung in monasteries, family altars, and used in ceremonial processions. Their images of deities and various religious scenes were a means to teach others about the life and ways of the Buddha. Framed by green brocade fabric, this thangka features Green Tara. Tara embodies the sacred feminine in Buddhism. Her presence in Buddhism can be traced back to the 6th century CE, prior to which there were no female bodhisattvas. When green, Tara represents energy and vigor.
This beautiful thangka was made in Nepal. Each one is hand painted and truly unique, displaying artistic differences in color and fabric designs. Such variations are signs of the maker’s handmade touch. This banner is about 23 inches across at the top and about 36 inches long. Painting is about 11 x 14 inches.
