A Thangka is a type of banner and traditionally features a spiritual painting on a fabric background. Originating in Tibet between the 7th and 12th century, Thangka wall hangings were hung in monasteries, family altars, and used in ceremonial processions. Their images of deities and various religious scenes were a means to teach others about the life and ways of the Buddha. Framed by an ornate brocade fabric, this thangka features a painting of Maitreya Buddha. Maitreya Buddha is believed to be the Buddha who will return to earth one day. The position of his hands is symbolic of the first sermon originally delivered by Gautama Buddha after he reached enlightenment. They form a wheel, referring to the Wheel of Dharma. Positioned over his heart, the gesture indicates that the teachings come straight from the heart of Buddha. 

This beautiful thangka was made in Nepal. Each one is truly unique, displaying artistic differences in color and fabric designs. Such variations are signs of the maker’s handmade touch. This banner measures about 22 inches across at the top and about 36 inches long. The hanging’s framed painting measures 10 inches across and 14 inches long.
